Southern Star
Concrete, Inc. is led by Tommy Abbott, President
and Chief Executive Officer, and Dan Hilton, VP
of Finance.
Tommy Abbott has worked in the
ready-mix industry in Texas for over 20 years –
first at Pioneer International and more recently
at Hanson Building Materials America. Tommy is
a native Texan, born and raised in Fort Worth
and has lived most of his life in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Tommy earned is BBA in
Engineering Business from the University of
Texas in Austin in 1980. After joining Pioneer
in 1983, he became an integral part of the
executive management team of Pioneer’s ready-mix
concrete business in Texas. He was responsible
for managing and operating various business
units during Pioneer’s acquisition and growth
period in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
Each of these assignments involved general
management of ongoing operations and the
integration of newly acquired business units.
Prior to the acquisition of
assets from Hanson and the formation of Southern
Star Concrete, Tommy was Vice President of
Hanson’s North Texas Concrete Division,
consisting of 30 operating plants producing over
3 million cubic yards of concrete annually.
Dan Hilton earned his BBA in
Accounting from the University of Texas at
Arlington in 1993 and is a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA).
Dan began his finance and
accounting career with the R.P. Kincheloe
Company, a subsidiary of Philips Electronics and
an international electronic manufacturer.
During his tenure with Kincheloe, Dan earned
successive promotions, becoming Controller in
1997.
Dan came to Southern Star
Concrete in January 2005 to be the Corporate
Controller with responsibilities for managing
Financial Reporting, A/P and billing functions.
Within a year Dan was given increased
responsibilities for all aspects of finance and
accounting, including coordination of external
audits, investor and banker relationships and
the financial analysis.
Dan played a key role during
various acquisitions, including Argos, Farris
and Cabot. He is currently active in the Texas
Society of CPA’s and The Institute of Management
Accountants.
Both Tommy and Dan are committed to making
Southern Star the best independent ready-mix
company in the United States by ensuring that
Southern Star remains:

its markets with the most
competitive cost structure;

concrete, combined with excellent
customer service; and,
